NEW: 15 die during Heroes, Defence Forces holidays

FIFTEEN people died while 85 were injured in 132 road traffic accidents that were recorded across the country during this year’s Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.

In a statement on Thursday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said while there was a decrease in the number of road traffic accidents this year, there were more fatalities compared to the same period last year.

He said 163 accidents were recorded last year, claiming five lives and injuring 29.

“The recorded statistics show a decrease in the number of accidents recorded from 163 to 132 and an increase in the number of people killed from five to 15,” he said.

“The number of people injured increased from 29 to 85.”

Asst Comm Nyathi said overtaking errors, speeding and misjudgement were major causes of the road accidents.

He urged motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it’s not safe to do so,” he said.

“Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers or goods.

“Drivers should not speed in situations which are not safe to do so.”
