NEW: 18 months in jail for nicking US$40 from grandma

A 24-year-old man from Glendale has been jailed for an effective 18 months for stealing US$40 from his grandmother.

Tapiwa Chipungu appeared before Concession magistrate Mr Joshua Nembaware on Tuesday facing charges of unlawful entry and theft.

He was convicted on his own plea of pleaded guilty.

The court heard that on June 14, 2023, at around 6pm, Tapiwa went to his grandmother Christine Chipungu (59)’s bedroom, where he stole keys to the butchery while she was at church.

Tapiwa then went to Godzanut Butchery at Nyachuru complex, Glendale, where his grandmother works, and used the stolen keys to gain entry.

He stole some of the cash that was kept at the  premises.

Tapiwa was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment, of which six months were suspended for a period of five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence.

A further six months were suspended on condition he restitutes his grandmother US$40 through the clerk of court by August 31. 2023

Of the US$40 that was stolen, US$20 has been recovered.
