TWO people sustained injuries and were admitted at Chipinge District Hospital after a Toyota Hilux truck they were travelling in collided head-on with a Harare-bound Inter Africa bus at Rutengeni area this morning.
The accident occurred after the bus avoided hitting stray cattle and collided with the vehicle. No passengers aboard the bus were injured.
Chipinge District police community relations officer, Assistant Inspector Jowert Kamera, confirmed the incident. He urged drivers to always exercise extreme caution when on the road.
The bus driver, Mr Philip Kambawa, said: “I was driving down Rutengeni Mountain towards Tanganda Halt when stray cattle suddenly appeared on the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting the cattle, I swerved and collided with an oncoming truck that was carrying maize,” he said
Mr Innocent Matika, the truck driver, said he was lucky to be alive.
“I cannot recall what happened and only saw myself here in hospital when I regained consciousness,” he said.
Stray cattle have become a headache for motorists plying the Birchenough Bridge-Chipinge route.
