TWO HUNDRED AND SIX inmates are currently sitting for the 2021 Grade 7, O, and A level examinations across the 10 centers that the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) established in prisons, in conjunction with Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC).
ZPCS deputy spokesperson, Superintendent Peter Chaparanganda, said education is everyone’s right and no one should be deprived of it.
“Education is a basic human right, and ZPCS ensures that its accessibility by all offenders who require it is made easy.
Across the 10 centers, Harare Central Prison Adult has 35 O’ level and 11 A’ level candidates, Khami Maximum (29 O’ level and 16 Grade 7), Chikurubi Prison Adult (35 O’ level males and 1 female), Masvingo at Mutimurefu (18 O’level and 10 Grade 7), Midlands Whawha Young Offenders (24 O’ level), Manicaland (4 O’ level and 10 Grade 7), Mashonaland Central Bindura Prison Adult (5 O’ level), Mazowe (2 O’ level), Kadoma Prison Adult (4 O’ level), and Chinhoyi (2 O’ level).
In line with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), ZPCS is working to ensure that inmates are not left behind in education.
“We ensure that those inmates inside can also contribute to the development and capacitation of key national institutions, which will create the enabling environment critical for transformative economic growth,” said Superintendent Chaparanganda.
