THREE cases of rabies were confirmed in Buhera District last week when three people were treated at local health institutions after they were bitten by stray dogs.
Buhera District health promotion officer Ms Memory Chimupunga said people should seek early treatment when infected by the virus as it can be deadly.
She said they are working with the Veterinary Services Department (VSD) and pet owners to raise awareness about rabies in local communities.
“Buhera District last week recorded three rabies cases after people were bitten by stray dogs. The victims received early treatment at local health institutions. Unvaccinated dogs pose greater danger and we urge people to be on the lookout for stray animals and avoid coming into contact with them,” said Ms Chimupunga.
Meanwhile, Manicaland VSD chief health inspector Mr Roy Dube has called on pet owners to ensure that their dogs are fully vaccinated to prevent cases of rabies.
He urged the public to report any stray dogs in their communities to local veterinary departments or local authority for intervention measures.
