FOUR people have been confirmed dead, while 13 others were seriously injured when a South Africa-bound Munhenzva bus overturned near Rutenga Growth Point.

The Cape Town-bound bus that was carrying 27 people, including the crew, overturned and landed on its roof after the driver reportedly lost control about 10km out of Rutenga, along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, around 6pm.

Three of the deceased died after they were trapped under the bus after it overturned.

The fourth victim died at Neshuro District Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.

The injured are admitted at the same hospital and are in critical condition.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said a statement on the fatal crash will be issued.

Police, with assistance from recovery truck teams and members of the public, battled for hours to rescue survivors.

Incessant rains that were pounding the area also made rescue efforts challenging.
