FOUR people died in separate road traffic accidents that occurred between Saturday and today in Mutare, Rusape, Marange and Nyanga.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the accidents, saying three of the accidents were hit-and-run incidents.

He said all the four victims in the accidents died on the spot.

In the accident that occurred in the early hours of today, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the body of Evans Tendai Mandimutsira (37) of Mahwani Village in Nyabadza area was discovered at the 20km peg along the Rusape-Nyanga Road by Stanslus Zvirahwa (37) of Hauna who was driving along the same road.

“The motorist alerted two villagers – Charles Chitugu and Shingi Nyamupanda – who then called Rusape’s traffic police. Police attended the scene and conveyed the deceased’s body to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post mortem,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

He said police in Rusape are investigating another fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident after a 41-year-old man was knocked down by an unidentified motorist at the 53km peg along Rusape-Nyanga Road yesterday evening around 8pm.

“In another accident on December 24 around 4pm, Steven Kwenda died on the spot when a Toyota Wish vehicle he was driving veered off the road to the right and overturned two times before landing on its wheels after he lost control of the car. Six passengers were on board, with four of them sustaining serious and were ferried to Marange Clinic. The other two passengers are in a stable condition,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said on Saturday around 11pm, a motorist discovered the body of a man lying in the middle of the road at the 243km peg of the Harare-Mutare Road.

“He alerted police at Magamba Tollgate who then called Penhalonga police to attend the scene. Police observed that the deceased sustained head injuries, broken legs, a deep cut on the stomach and bruises all over the body. Investigations indicated that it was a hit-and-run accident,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
