NEW: 4000 motorists in hot soup

The ongoing police operation targeting drivers of unregistered and unlicensed vehicles has accounted for close to 4 000 alleged law-breakers since it began on Saturday.

In a statement, police also urged motorists to cooperate with traffic police officers carrying out the operation.

“The ZRP urges the public to cooperate with the police officers carrying out the current operation against unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered motor vehicles and non-complying PSVs (public service vehicles),” the statement reads in part.

“On January 17, 2022, 1 688 arrests were made under the operation.

“The cumulative number of arrests now stands at 3 926.”
