LOCAL farmers should practice agroecology, as a strategy to adapt to climate change and as a measure against rising fertiliser prices due to global geopolitical developments, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri has said.
Agroecology is sustainable farming that makes the best use of natural resources.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, Professor Jiri said the Government recognises the importance of agroecology training.
“The Ukraine conflict suddenly had a bearing on what we do; it affected supply chains.
“This is why at this particular juncture, agroecology training becomes extremely important, because we must be able to negate the effects of geopolitical developments.”
This comes as several farmers graduated with a Diploma in Agroecology at Fambidzanai Permaculture Centre in Stapleford recently.
Fambidzanai Permaculture Centre houses a Diploma programme in Agroecology in affiliation with the Bindura University of Science Education.
Earlier this year about 23 000 tonnes of fertiliser donated to Zimbabwe by Russia were blocked by the European Union, as part of the bloc’s blockade on Russia’s agricultural exports, which was affected in response to the conflict in Ukraine.
