Zimbabwe will, at the end of this month, join the rest of the African continent in observing and celebrating the African Traditional Medicine Day.

Every year, the 31st of August is set aside to mark the important role that is played by indigenous African traditional medicine.

To mark this day, PROMETRA Zimbabwe, an organisation which was set up to preserve African traditional medicine, culture and indigenous science, will embark on an awareness campaign.

The organisation is involved in the promotion of traditional medicine, preserving culture, research, education, advocacy and the development of African traditional medicine.

Beaven Munyengeterwa, the PROMETRA Zimbabwe executive chairman said a number of activities are being lined up for this year’s commemorations.

“We are currently engaging our stakeholders as we prepare for this year’s commemorations. As an organisation we are going to use this day to promote the use of indigenous traditional medicine,” Munyetererwa, a traditional healer who is better-known as Changamire Moyo, said.

PROMETRA is an international non-governmental organisation which is headquartered in Dakar, Senegal.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that around 80 percent of the African population relies on traditional medicine for their basic health needs.
