NEW: All-star extravaganza to mark Women’s month celebrations

Online Reporter

THE City Sports Center will be a hive of activity this Sunday, when the Harare Basketball Association (HBA) holds the inaugural edition of their All-star games.

The brainchild of HBA Women and Youth Commission head, Viv Manuel, the All-star games will be held at the City Sports Center and are part of the Women’s month celebrations.

Among the festivities lined up are three all-star games, a three-point and slam-dunk contest.

These games include the country’s Under-25 girls team taking on a select side that will comprise of former and current senior women’s team players.

The senior men’s national team will take on the Under-25 boys team, while two select sides of B’ League players will lock horns.

“The plan was also to introduce an All-star event, but I decided to make it a Women’s month theme once I remembered the significance of the month of March,” said Manuel.

“The plan is to hold this event every year, and we plan to use this year’s edition to iron out the kinks,” she said.

Manuel has been working day and night preparing for the event, for the last couple of months, and has roped in the HBA and Drugs against Basketball.

“This event wouldn’t have happened without the consent and help of the HBA and Drugs against Basketball Initiative.

“We have also invited a speaker from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee to talk to the players on the dangers of things like doping and drugs in sport.

“It is a very important subject, and one that we need to continue building awareness over in both basketball and sport in general,” she said.
