FOOTBALL fans in Manicaland are in for a treat this weekend when cross-town rivals Mutare City Rovers and Manica Diamonds Juniors battle for supremacy in a ZIFA Eastern Region Division One local derby at Sakubva Stadium on Sunday.
The clash will be a typical teacher versus student affair as Gusha Bhora gaffer Luke “Vahombe” Masomere pits his tactical wits against youthful coach Hibron “Adhala Chommiey” Makukutu. The latter played under the former as Manica Diamonds got promoted into the Premiership from the second-tier division in 2018.
Exciting action is expected in the encounter as both teams are seeking to return to winning ways following defeats in the previous fixtures. Mutare City Rovers were beaten 1-0 at FC Wangu Mazodze while Manica Diamonds Juniors went down 2-0 away to Bikita Minerals.
The promotion-chasing municipal side are in sixth position with seven points from four matches, while their opponents sit 11th on the table after collecting four points from as many games.
Makukutu and his counterpart both said they are gunning for victory in the duel.
“We come into the contest as underdogs given Mutare City Rovers’ experience but we are not reading much into that. Our goal is to collect maximum points and we will give it our best shot. We respect our opponents but do not fear them and we are ready for the match,” said Makukutu.
