A group of local medical professionals and specialists have set up the Zimbabwe Medical Awards Trust (ZMAT), to honour health workers who have championed the fight against Covid-19.

ZMAT chairperson, Dr Josephat Chiripanyanga, said medical professionals who succumbed to the coronavirus will also be honoured posthumously.

“The main objective is to honour doctors and medical professionals and also hospitals that excel in the medical field by giving them awards,” said Dr Chiripanyanga.

“This year we are focusing on legends or pioneers of the medical field who were at the forefront during the Covid-19 era, and those who died while fighting the spread of the pandemic.”

He added:

“We are now building a heritage in order to appreciate, recognise and award the work that our medical professionals and specialists have done and are still doing.

“For the doctors who died helping fight the pandemic, we are going to honour them posthumously.”

The awards ceremony will be held at a local hotel on December 4.
