‘New boers’ like Ramaphosa the real enemies of freedom: Malema

EFF leader Julius Malema has slammed Cyril Ramaphosa’s “boer” remark, saying “It is a sign of hypocrisy and dishonesty” in a letter.
While Malema said in the letter that was published on Politicsweb, that during the struggle, “boer” meant the apartheid system, the context Ramaphosa used the word in was intended to mislead the people.

“The people of South Africa are not fools who will be frightened by such sentiments, because they know that today the real enemy for economic freedom, or even all sorts of freedom, are people like Cyril Ramaphosa, amabhuna amnyama,” said.

He went further to state that “the characteristics that defined the “boers” are the same characteristics that define Cyril Ramaphosa today, one who is not afraid to go and bid to buy an animal for R18 million, and one who is possibly complicit in the massacre of mineworkers in Marikana, but will use State institutions to exonerate himself.”

“To this day, the workers have not been given R12 500, and Cyril Ramaphosa is benefiting from the blood and sweat of these workers as a director of London Mine. Workers continue to suffer, when the likes of Ramaphosa have so much money who could even buy buffaloes for R18 million,” Malema said.

“The people of South Africa are not fools, and should appreciate that today we have new boers like Cyril Ramaphosa who will mislead them during elections so that they can continue making money for themselves,” Malema said.

The Star newspaper reported on Monday that Ramaphosa had urged Limpopo residents to vote or the “Boers” would take back power.
“If you don’t vote, the Boers will come back to control us,” Ramaphosa apparently said in Seshego.

Ramaphosa said on Tuesday it was unfortunate that his use of the term “boer” had caused offence.
“In my conversation with a Seshego resident, I warned of the danger of the country going backwards, and used a term that has commonly been used by black South Africans to refer to the erstwhile apartheid regime,” he said in a statement.

“It is a term that continues to be understood in that way.” —  Times Live/Sapa.
