NEW: Bogus lawyer trial starts Wednesday

Online Reporter

THE trial of a 39-year-old man who allegedly misrepresented himself as a legal practitioner before claiming US$300 in fees from a criminal suspect is expected to start tomorrow.

Wesley Tafara Jena will appear before Harare magistrate Ms Nyaradzo Manokore charged with fraud and violating the Legal Practitioner Act.

On April 20, Jena allegedly lied to Debate Mahachi that he was a lawyer from Jena and Associates and could represent his brother in a bail application.

He allegedly charged Mahachi US$500 to represent his brother. Mahachi paid US$300 and he did not receive a receipt.

When Mahachi’s brother appeared for bail at the said court, Jena remained seated instead of presenting himself as his lawyer.

Irked by Jena’s action, Mahachi launched an investigation that revealed he was not registered with the Law Society of Zimbabwe.
