New boxing union formed

A GROUP of former boxers have come together and formed a union which they hope will cater for the needs of retired pugilists while also championing the rights of active fighters.
Former national middleweight champion Modercai Donga has been appointed interim chairman of the Boxers Union of Zimbabwe.
The members are scheduled to hold a follow-up meeting at Raylton Sports Club this Saturday.

Donga is the manager of Big Fish Boxing Promotions.
Another member of the union is Delta Force manager Clyde Musonda, who is currently suspended by the Zimbabwe Boxing Board of Control, after breaching the rules last year.

In a statement, the Boxing Union of Zimbabwe said they will be registering their structure as an affiliate to the trade unions.
“The setting up of this crucial organisation is not a secret at all. We have noted with sadness that many local boxers lead a miserable life when they retire from the ring and this is despite the fact that they would have entertained thousands of people.

“Many of the boxers in Zimbabwe live a sorrowful life and move with a begging bowl, yet their skills are worth a fortune, which they could fall on after retirement,” said BUZ in the statement.

The Union intends to cater for the retired boxers, whether they fought as amateurs or professionals, and will also represent active boxers on issues like health, contracts and investment of earnings.
