NEW: Breast cancer can be more dangerous in men

MOST men do not believe they can get breast cancer despite scientific evidence that proves otherwise, a leading pathologist has said.

Dr Shamiso Chowe, a pathologist with Lancet Laboratories, said: “Wherever I go, most men believe that breast cancer is women’s disease. Research has, however, shown that 1 percent of the male populace can develop breast cancer.

“So, like their female counterparts, men must also periodically self-examine their breast areas.”

Dr Chowe said in men, breast cancer develops faster and rapidly spreads to the other parts of the body.

“A man’s breast area does not have much body tissue and if breast cancer develops, the disease spreads rapidly.

“Although cases of men developing breast cancer are rare, the fact is that men can also have breast cancer,” she added during a breast cancer awareness campaign that was held in Domboshava.

The campaign was part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month commemorations.
