NEW: Calls for greater recognition for traditional medicine

CALLS for greater recognition for African traditional medicine are getting louder, as the day set aside to reflect on its importance draws closer.

Every year, August 31 is set aside as the African Traditional Medicine Day.

Zimbabwe National Practitioners Association (ZINPA) president Mr Cuthbert Nyaruvenda says there is need to formally recognise the African Traditional Medicine Day.

“As traditional healers and herbalists, this is our most important day. I am, therefore, urging all traditional medicine practitioners to come forward and participate as we mark this important day,” he said.

On the day, ZINPA will conduct an awareness campaign to debunk myths that are associated with African traditional medicine.

The association, which boasts a membership of 300, represents the interests of traditional healers, herbalists and midwives, among others.
