NEW: Can Africa build AI faster together than alone

NO African country is going to build a world-class AI ecosystem entirely on its own.

The resources required — advanced computing infrastructure, high-quality data, specialised research talent, significant investment and supportive governance frameworks — are simply too substantial for any single developing nation to assemble independently.

This is not a weakness unique to Zimbabwe.

It is the reality facing nearly every country on the continent.

The question, therefore, is not whether African nations should collaborate on AI. The question is how quickly they choose to start and how much ground they are prepared to lose in the meantime.

For Africa, however, the AI journey is about more than simply adopting technology developed elsewhere.

It is about creating solutions that reflect the continent’s unique challenges, languages, cultures and development priorities, as well as AI systems that improve food security, expand financial inclusion, strengthen healthcare and create new economic opportunities for millions of people.

Zimbabwe is well-placed to become part of this growing AI ecosystem.

The country has a strong tradition of education, a growing ICT sector, talented software developers and universities producing graduates in science and technology.

These strengths provide a solid foundation.

However, building a globally competitive AI ecosystem requires more than local talent alone; it demands significant investment in research, computing infrastructure, high-quality data and skilled professionals that very few countries possess entirely on their own.

This is why collaboration is becoming one of the most important ingredients for successful AI development.

By working together, African countries can share knowledge, pool resources, strengthen research and accelerate innovation in ways that would be impossible to achieve individually, building an AI ecosystem based on partnership, shared expertise and common goals.

One of the greatest benefits of collaboration is the ability to share research and knowledge.

Universities and research institutions across Africa are already conducting important work in agriculture, healthcare, climate science and cybersecurity. When researchers collaborate across borders, they can exchange ideas, build on each other’s discoveries and develop more practical solutions for African communities.

Zimbabwean universities stand to benefit significantly from joint research projects, academic conferences and student exchange programmes.

Another important area where collaboration can make a significant difference is AI for African languages.

Thousands of African languages remain underrepresented in digital technologies, limiting access to AI for millions of people.

By working together, African countries can develop language datasets, speech recognition systems and translation tools that better serve local communities. Zimbabwe can contribute expertise in AI applications for Ndebele and Shona, while benefitting from advances in languages such as Swahili, Yoruba, Amharic, and Zulu, making AI more inclusive and ensuring technological progress reaches a far wider population.

Collaboration can also help address one of the biggest barriers to AI development: access to computing infrastructure.

Training advanced AI models requires powerful computers, specialised processors and reliable cloud services all expensive to build and maintain independently.

Instead of each country duplicating these facilities, African nations could share research computing centres, regional AI laboratories and collaborative cloud infrastructure — allowing universities, startups and researchers to access tools that might otherwise remain beyond their financial reach.

The need for skilled professionals is another area where regional cooperation can make a real difference.

Across Africa, demand for expertise in AI, data science, cloud computing and cybersecurity continues to outpace supply.

Joint training programmes, online learning platforms, university partnerships and research fellowships can help countries collectively build a larger pool of skilled talent and when knowledge is shared across borders, every participating country benefits.

Entrepreneurship is another area where collaboration can strengthen AI development.

Across Africa, startups are creating innovative solutions in agriculture, fintech, healthcare, education and renewable energy, but many face similar challenges limited funding and restricted access to technical expertise.

Stronger connections between startup ecosystems can encourage investment, mentorship and regional expansion.

Zimbabwean entrepreneurs could collaborate with innovation hubs across Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa and Ghana while contributing their own ideas to the wider African technology community.

Cybersecurity provides another compelling reason for regional cooperation. Cyber threats rarely respect national borders.

By sharing threat intelligence, cybersecurity expertise and professional training, African countries can strengthen their collective ability to defend critical digital infrastructure — and Zimbabwe can both benefit from and actively contribute to these regional initiatives.

Collaboration can also make Africa more attractive to investors.

Technology investors seek regions with strong research institutions, skilled workforces and vibrant startup ecosystems.

A connected African AI ecosystem has the potential to attract far greater investment than isolated national efforts, creating opportunities across businesses, universities and technology sectors throughout the continent.

For Zimbabwe, regional collaboration offers numerous opportunities.

The country already possesses growing ICT expertise, innovative entrepreneurs, and universities producing technology graduates, with significant AI application opportunities in agriculture, mining, healthcare, education, financial services and environmental management.

By strengthening partnerships across the continent, Zimbabwe can accelerate research, develop technical expertise and participate more actively in Africa’s digital future.

Successful collaboration requires sustained funding, effective coordination, compatible regulations, strong data governance and trust among participating organisations.

These challenges are real but not insurmountable.

They require long-term planning, transparent governance and shared commitment from governments, universities, businesses and development partners.

Zimbabwe does not need to develop AI in isolation.

By collaborating with partners across Africa, it can help build an ecosystem that is innovative, inclusive and capable of driving sustainable development for generations to come.

The future of African AI will be strongest when countries combine their strengths to create solutions that benefit the entire continent rather than individual nations alone.
