MUTARE City Council Ward 12 councillor, Councillor Simon Chabuka, has been elected the new mayor.

Cllr Chabuka beat Cllr Farai Bhiza, who is the deputy mayor, in the elections that were held at Civic Centre this morning.

The post fell vacant following the recall of Cllr Blessing Tandi by his MDC-T party led by Mr Douglas Mwonzora.

Council spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi confirmed the development.

“Councillor Simon Chabuka has been elected the new mayor of the City of Mutare. The elections were held during a special council meeting and were presided over by Mutare District Development Coordinator Mr Wilson Bore,” he said.

Mr Mutiwi said Cllr Bhiza will continue in his position as deputy mayor.
