Zimbabwe has opened a new Chancery in Abuja, Nigeria, in line with President Mnangagwa’s infrastructure development agenda and efforts to strengthen the country’s diplomatic footprint on the continent.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said Government has prioritised the modernisation and expansion of its diplomatic infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic diplomacy, deepen bilateral and multilateral relations, and project a positive national image on the global stage.

“This strategic investment reflects the Government’s commitment to building a modern, efficient and professional foreign service capable of advancing Zimbabwe’s national interests and supporting the country’s development agenda,” read the statement.

“A significant milestone in this endeavour is the construction of the New Zimbabwe Chancery in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria. As one of Africa”s largest economies and the host nation of the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria occupies a strategic position in Zimbabwe’s engagement with West Africa.

“The establishment of a modern diplomatic complex in Abuja demonstrates Zimbabwe”s unwavering commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria, enhancing cooperation with ECOWAS member states and promoting South-South collaboration.”

The ministry described the new chancery as an impressive architectural landmark that reflects Zimbabwe”s aspirations under the Second Republic.

Designed to combine modern aesthetics with functionality, the building presents an elegant and dignified image befitting Zimbabwe’s diplomatic presence abroad.

“Its contemporary facade, spacious office accommodation, secure facilities, modern conference and reception areas, and efficient operational spaces provide an enabling environment for effective diplomacy, trade and investment promotion, consular services, cultural diplomacy and engagement with development partners,” the statement reads.

The ministry said the diplomatic complex also includes a residential component comprising three modern housing blocks built to accommodate diplomatic personnel.

Each residential block is designed to house two families, providing quality accommodation for officers and their dependents while promoting operational efficiency and reducing accommodation costs.

“This integrated approach to mission infrastructure enhances the welfare of diplomatic staff and contributes to the effective delivery of Zimbabwe’s foreign service mandate.

“In addition, the Ambassador’s Official Residence is strategically located within a short distance of the Chancery, ensuring convenient access between the official residence and the mission. This proximity enhances the Ambassador’s ability to undertake official engagements efficiently, host diplomatic functions, and effectively coordinate the activities of the Mission while maintaining the dignity and prestige associated with Zimbabwe’s highest diplomatic representation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement further reads.

Beyond its architectural appeal, the ministry said the new chancery symbolises Zimbabwe”s renewed confidence and commitment to excellence in foreign service infrastructure.

The development enhances Zimbabwe’s visibility within Abuja’s diplomatic district and serves as a centre for engagement with government officials, investors, members of the Zimbabwean diaspora, international organisations and development partners.

According to the ministry, the project is fully aligned with the Second Republic’s “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” policy by providing world-class diplomatic facilities that support investment promotion, economic diplomacy, trade facilitation and stronger bilateral cooperation between Zimbabwe and Nigeria, as well as other West African states.
