SUNGURA musician Simon Mutambi recently suffered a major setback after drummer, Isaac Gonora, “defected” to the Cheso Boys Band.
Gonora was a key member of Mutambi’s Cobra Kings band.
The Cheso Boys Band is fronted by Esau and Tatenda Macheso, sons of the legendary sungura musician, Alick Macheso.
Before the “defection,” Gonora was, for four years, a Cobra Kings drummer and dancer.
Gonora was part of the Cobra Kings line-up that recorded the hit song “Mr Ibu”, and two albums.
Mutambi bemoaned the loss, saying it came at a crucial time.
“I lost him at a time when I was about to go into the studio to record.
“I do not want to lie to you, losing him was painful and a huge setback,” Mutambi said.
Gonora confirmed leaving Mutambi’s band, insisting that there was nothing unusual about the move.
“It is true that I am now working with the Cheso Boys. In our industry, this is normal.
“I did not have a permanent contract with Mutambi,” the talented drummer, who nurtured his talents on the streets of Harare, said.
Isaac’s father, Daniel, who taught the youngster to play the drums when he was only four years old, confirmed the development.
Efforts to get a comment from the Cheso Boys Band were fruitless, as both Esau and Tatenda were not responding to our calls.
