GOVERNMENT is spearheading collective efforts with other stakeholders to put in place measures to fight cholera outbreaks and continued spread of the disease.
As of yesterday, 20 446 suspected cholera cases had been recorded, with 2 324 being confirmed. There were 19 711 recoveries, while 71 and 381 were confirmed and suspected deaths respectively.
Manicaland recorded 22 new suspected cases, bringing the cumulative total to 5 666. 17 cases were confirmed, taking the total to 1 080. The province recorded 26 new recoveries, with the total cases now standing at 5 464 while hospitalised cases are 53. No new death cases were recorded, with confirmed and suspected death cases being 35 and 114 respectively.
In an update on the cholera situation across the country, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) said Government is leaving no stone unturned in combating and eradicating the disease.
“Health and Child Care Minister, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, yesterday highlighted various collaborative measures that are in place through the Ministry, other line Ministries and stakeholders to arrest the spread of cholera. These include activation of the Incident Management System, setting up of 134 cholera treatment camps and 33 Oral Rehydration Points countrywide.
“The other measures include deployment of Rapid Response Teams to conduct on-site treatment and initiation of Operation Chenesa Harare,” said the Ministry.
MoHCC said ensuring the provision of safe drinking water through borehole drilling and distribution of water treatment commodities is critical in fighting cholera.
Community engagement and information dissemination initiatives have also been lined up to raise awareness on the disease, added the Ministry.
MoHCC said securing of the Oral Cholera Vaccine, which is set to be administered in affected hotspots from Monday next week, will augment the procurement of medicines and other consumables.
