GOVERNMENT is adopting a multi-stakeholder approach involving public and private sectors as coordinated efforts to build Manicaland communities’ resilience in disaster risk reduction and management intensify.
This was said by acting Manicaland Provincial Director (Local Government Services and Administration), Mr John Misi, during a Ministry of Local Government and Public Work’s contingency planning meeting held in Mutare today that was attended by Government ministries, departments, agencies and development partners.
Mr Misi said disasters risks management requires collective and holistic implementation to strengthen capacity for effective preparedness and efficient responses.
“The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has made remarkable progress in putting in place a frame of work to provide the foundation for building communities’ resilience. By extending disaster management profiling and planning to local authority level, it reinforces the collective nature of disasters risks management and outlines a holistic approach to dealing with such.
”Disasters Management Plans have been instituted in schools in the province with support from Higher Life Foundation, Care International and World Food Programme. We have also received support from the Department of Civil Protection, Environmental Management Agency, Ministry of Health and Child Care, Veterinary Services Department, Zimbabwe National Water Authority, Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company, Anjin Mine and Red Cross Society of Zimbabwe, among others,” said Mr Misi.
Mr Misi said the provincial contingency plan will be useful for Manicaland’s response planning purposes and will also contribute to the National Disaster Management and Contingency Plan already in place.
