The Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) will be working on weekends to clear the backlog in processing vehicle number plates, which currently stands at about 50 000.

Over the past week, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has been impounding all unregistered and unlicensed vehicles.

The operation has accounted for more than 7 000 people so far.

In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said CVR will be issuing vehicle registration plates between 8am and 3pm on both Saturdays and Sundays.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development wishes to advise the motoring public that CVR will be working over the weekends for issuance of number plates to motorists who had already submitted their applications at CVR in order to clear the current backlog,” reads the statement.

“CVR will be operating from 8am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. For new applications, motorists are advised to use our agencies; that is, Zimpost and ZIMRA countrywide.”

About 80 000 vehicles are understood to be unregistered.
