THE Embassy of Kenya in Zimbabwe on Friday celebrated its renowned environmentalist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Professor Wangari Maathai, with a clean-up exercise at the Mbare Market Dumpsite.
Several diplomats participated in the clean-up exercise, which was held in partnership with the Harare City Council.
The event ran under the theme: ‘Environmental Diplomacy-Supporting Clean Environments for Business Progress’.
Kenya’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Stella Munyi said her office dedicated celebrations of the day by focusing on the environment and climate change issues as part of Kenya’s Foreign Policy focus under the Environmental Diplomacy pillar.
“Our participation in the clean-up exercise here is also a manifestation of our support to the call by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, on the national clean up.
“We are therefore partners with the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe on this clarion call of cleaning up our environments.
“I also call on other organisations and institutions of the like-mind to support such initiatives for a clean and safe environment for all in our neighbourhoods,” she said.
Africa Environment Day (March 3) was named Wangari Mathaai Day by the African Union (AU) to honour the social, environmental and political activist who was revered for spearheading sustainable development, democracy and peace.
