NEW: ‘Disaster risk management should include youths’

Online Reporter

THE proposed Disaster Risk Management and Civil Protection Bill should address issues affecting youths during natural disasters.

The call was made by National Association of Youth Organisations (NAYO) national coordinator Mr Mitchel Gondo.

He was presenting a paper during a disaster management workshop that was organised by ActionAid in Harare on Thursday.

“In terms of demographics, youths constitute the larger percentage. It is therefore important for Government to consider some of the recommendations that came out of this workshop regarding the involvement of youths during natural disasters,” he said.

The workshop, which brought together various stakeholders from Government, civil society organisations and United Nations organs, looked at how stakeholders can effectively contribute towards the proposed Bill.

The principles of the proposed Bill were recently approved by Cabinet.
