PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has reiterated his call for young people to desist from substance and drug abuse in order to mould responsible future leaders.
Addressing thousands of ZANU PF members and supporters during the ruling party’s 2023 harmonised elections national campaign launch at Mutema High School in Mutema-Musikavanhu Constituency, Chipinge District on Saturday, the President said the scourge is detrimental to individuals and destroying societal values.
President Mnangagwa’s sentiments came ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which is commemorated today, June 26, annually.
“Our departed founding fathers can look at the work we are doing and be so proud. Now we are grappling with this challenge of drug and substance abuse. But can we bequeath our country’s legacy to young people who are hooked on drugs? Down with taking dangerous drugs and substances,” said President Mnangagwa.
Government has escalated efforts and initiatives to tackle drug and substance abuse, with Cabinet adopting a National Plan of Action as the Second Republic’s concerted efforts to end the scourge continue.
Over 6 000 people have been arrested and prosecuted countrywide for drug-related offences.
