DURAMAZWI Mbira Ensemble, which represented Zimbabwe at the Dubai Expo 2020, is set to release a single titled, “Gara Gara.”

Fronted by Mbare-based traditional healer, Gogo Sarudzai Jaravaza, the new song will later be incorporated into the group’s debut album, which will be titled, “Mavambo.”

Over the years, the 10-member ensemble, which fuses mbira with traditional drums and gourds (hosho), has only been releasing singles.

According to Gogo Jaravaza, the debut album signals a new era for the group.

“Mavambo means beginning. This is our first album, and to us this is the beginning of a long and fruitful journey,” she said.

“Chinyakare,” “Toisa Maoko,” and “Musarasara,” are some of the singles that will be incorporated into the album.

The majority of the songs on the upcoming album will tackle social issues, such as drug abuse, and cultural erosion, among others.
