THE ZIFA Eastern Region Division One League resumed last weekend after a two-week break, with both pacesetters, GreenFuel and Mutare City Rovers winning their matches to ensure that the title race stays alive for another week.
Action in the second-tier league had been paused to pave way for the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays as well as to allow all the clubs to undertake a Premiership induction workshop.
ZIFA Eastern Region vice-chairman, Simba Wisdom confirmed that the teams returned to action last weekend and are geared for the remainder of the campaign.
“The campaign resumed with matches over this past weekend. Only two fixtures – Manica Diamonds versus Renco Mine and Masvingo United versus Lowveld – were not fulfilled after Lowveld failed to travel and Renco Mine had a breakdown on their way to Mutare. We are now looking forward to concluding the season on a high note,” said Wisdom.
While Chisumbanje-based GreenFuel resumed from where they left off before the break a fortnight ago with a convincing 3-0 triumph away at Pro Melfort, their title rivals, Mutare City Rovers also restarted on a winning note after overcoming cross-town opponents, Buffaloes 2-1.
GushaBhora took both the three points at stake as well as the bragging rights in this local derby.
However, the ethanol producers are on the verge of clinching promotion into the elite league and add to the number of teams from Manicaland playing Premiership football.
GreenFuel lead the title charge with 62 points from 24 games and enjoy a 11-point cushion over second-placed Mutare City Rovers who have a game in hand.
