NEW: Fatal accident at Blanket Mine 

One worker was killed in an accident at Blanket Mine in Gwanda on Monday, the mine’s parent company has said.

In a statement, Caledonia Mining Corporation, said the accident took place underground, and investigations were underway to determine the cause.

“It is with regret that Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc confirms that an accident took place on the morning of 21 February 2022 at Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe, as a result of which one Blanket employee, Andrew Clydon Phiri (aged 35), was killed. The accident involved a LHD loader in one of Blanket’s underground haulages,” the company said.

“Further details cannot be released pending the outcome of an ongoing enquiry into this incident by the relevant authorities. Caledonia expresses its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.”

Through its Gwanda subsidiary, Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc is one of the country’s biggest gold producers.

Its shares are listed on stock exchanges in Toronto and New York. – New Ziana
