Joseph Nemaisa, a former CID detective who resigned and moved into law practice had to remember lessons from his former job, as he battled with armed robbers who had visited his Chadcombe home.
According to an internal police memorandum seen by The Sunday Mail, the incident happened yesterday in Chadcombe, a medium density suburb in Harare.
The account says at around 2045pm yesterday, five men besieged Nemaisa’s home and took his family hostage forcing them to avail their valuables.
Nemaisa’s son, Courage, is said to have alerted his father, who drove home immediately and arrived within 15 minutes.
“(W)hen the accused persons were about to leave, Joseph Nemaisa arrived at the scene and shot at the accused who were still in the house and there was an exchange of gunfire which led to the death of three of the accused persons and damaging the walls and windows of the house.
“The remaining two accused persons instructed the complainant to search the bodies of three accused persons and collected all firearms, particulars and cellphones of their accomplices,” the memo read.
Gun crime and robberies have been on the rise in Zimbabwe prompting authorities to send multiple warnings, but these have done very little to deter assailants.
