HUNDREDS of mourners paid their last respects to the late former Mutare mayor, Alderman Lawrence Dambudzo Mudehwe, who was buried at Manicaland Provincial Heroes Acre yesterday afternoon.
The ceremony was preceded by a church service held at a packed Sakubva Beit Hall.
Among those in attendance were Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Manicaland, Honourable Nokhuthula Matsikenyeri, Politburo member Cde Patrick Chinamasa, ZANU PF provincial chairperson Cde Mike Madiro, Mutasa South constituency legislator Cde Misheck Mugadza, Senator Judith Mawire and Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association Manicaland provincial chairperson Cde Gift Kagweda.
Minister Matsikenyeri described Alderman Mudehwe as a cadre who contributed immensely towards the development of the city and the country during and after the liberation struggle.
In her condolences to the Mudehwe family, she expressed hope that they will continue to be guided by the late hero’s principles of dedication, hard work and loyalty to the party and Government.
“We pray that as a family you will keep supporting our revolution because it was fought for by our heroes who include Alderman Mudehwe.
“His loyalty and unquestionable dedication to the country was excellent such that the President and Cabinet of Zimbabwe found it befitting that he be accorded the hero status,” she said.
The late alderman served as a mayor and councilor for Ward Five in the 1990s until 2003 when he retired as the longest serving mayor of Mutare.
He was also a district and provincial member of ZANU PF Central Committee and later progressed to the national central committee.
Alderman Mudehwe passed away on August 10.
