NEW: “Gender equality in mining vital”

Government should craft laws that promote gender equality and inclusivity in the mining sector, the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) has said.

Speaking during a media workshop for journalists on laws governing access to information in the mining sector, social and justice expert Ms Dorothy Hove said gender mainstreaming across the mining value chain was important.

“Inclusivity within the mining sector is something that really needs to be looked at, not just beyond the extractives, but also the policies of mining companies to ensure that there is a gender balance,” she said.

“This is also in line with our Constitution, in Section 56, where it talks about non-discrimination.

“As long as a mining company is adhering to the laws and policies of Zimbabwe, that simply means they have to ensure that provisions within the Constitution are implemented, especially around gender.”
