Geo Pomona Waste Management soccer pitch hosted its inaugural match on Saturday, featuring a showdown between FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy and the CAPS United developmental side.
The match was a significant milestone for the local football community, symbolising the opening of the state-of-the-art recreational facility to both local and international teams.
Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya emphasized the facility’s commitment to giving back to the community.
“We are more than delighted to host the first match at the football pitch and plans for future developments, including constructing a restaurant, terrace, and changing rooms with toilets,” he said.
Dr Nguwaya expressed the facility’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, highlighting the importance of providing a platform for teams, both local and international, to utilize the facilities.
This event marked the beginning of a new era for local football, drawing attention from prominent figures such as legendary coaches Sunday Chidzambwa and Lloyd Chitembwe, who graced the exhibition match.
Legendary coach Chidzambga commended Geo Pomona for its initiative, emphasizing the significance of grassroots development in football and the abundance of talent within the country.
On the pitch, FC Porto Zimbabwe Academy showcased resilience, securing a convincing 7-1 victory against the CAPS United developmental side, despite initially facing a one-goal deficit.
The Geo Pomona Waste Management facility extends its support beyond football, recognising the importance of a holistic approach to sports development.
In addition to the soccer pitch, the complex also boasts basketball and tennis courts, enriching the local sporting landscape.
