Geo Pomona Waste Management and beverage manufacturer Varun Beverages have opened discussions on establishing a large-scale polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant.

A delegation from Varun Beverages, led by CEO Mr Vijay Bahl, toured the Geo Pomona Waste Management facility, where they explored investment opportunities in waste management and recycling.

The Geo Pomona team was led by its CEO and executive chairperson Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, who said the visit underscored growing confidence in Zimbabwe’s waste management sector.

“Geo Pomona Waste Management was honoured to host the delegation from Varun Beverages led by the CEO, Mr Vijay Bahl, exploring investment opportunities in Zimbabwe’s waste value chain,” reads the statement.

During the visit, the delegation toured the integrated waste management facility, which has transformed the former Pomona dumpsite into a modern waste processing centre.

The engagement also marked the beginning of discussions on establishing a large-scale PET recycling plant to boost plastic waste recovery and create value from recyclable materials.

The proposed investment would complement ongoing efforts to modernise Zimbabwe’s waste management sector while promoting environmental sustainability.

“The visit showcased the transformation of a once-neglected dumpsite into a modern, integrated waste management facility, while also opening discussions on the establishment of a large-scale PET recycling plant,” reads the statement.

According to Geo Pomona, the engagement demonstrated the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable development.

“The engagement highlighted how innovation, execution and regional collaboration are advancing Zimbabwe’s circular economy and sustainable development agenda,” reads the statement.

The proposed PET recycling project is expected to enhance plastic waste collection and processing, reduce environmental pollution and contribute to the creation of green jobs, while supporting Zimbabwe’s broader vision of developing a sustainable, resource-efficient economy.
