FISH farming projects can help fight drug and substance abuse in schools by keeping learners occupied, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister Davis Marapira has said.
He made the remarks at a handover ceremony of at least 7 000 sexed tilapia fingerlings to Nehumambi Primary School in Buhera on Thursday.
“While fish farming addresses food and nutrition challenges, it also has the potential to mend the social fabric,” said Deputy Minister Marapira.
“Projects of this nature will help create employment for the youths to keep them away from the social ills of drug and substance abuse.”
Nehumambi Primary School head Mr Tarugarira Hardlife Munozogara said the donation will particularly boost learners’ fish farming skills, hence preparing them for life after school.
“We have been teaching our students theoretically but after receiving this donation, we now give practical life skills to these youngsters so that they will not be trapped in social ills,” he said.
“Our students are largely composed of those from disadvantaged communities. If we empower these youngsters, they will uplift their communities.
“With our current curriculum, which is much biased towards entrepreneurship, capital is key to kick-starting projects and this is a clear testament that our Government is aiming not to leave anyone behind in economic activities.”
