THE Government has issued a stern warning to miners operating without the necessary permits, particularly the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate.

Speaking at the Ministers Meet the Media session in Harare recently, Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Dr Sithembiso Nyoni emphasised that offenders would face severe penalties.

“Illegal mining is one of the major challenges facing the country,” she said.

“The ministry is deeply concerned about the extent of land degradation and pollution caused by mining activities.

“As a ministry, I want to warn the nation that conducting mining operations without the required permits, especially the Environmental Impact Assessment certificate, is illegal and will not be tolerated.”

Authorities have pledged to intensify enforcement measures to curb environmental damage caused by unregulated mining.
