NEW: Govt revises vocational training curriculum

GOVERNMENT is currently revising the existing curriculum being taught at Vocational Training Centres through mainstreaming arts and culture, gender and disabilities issues, an official has said.

To this extent, permanent secretary for Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation, Dr Thokozile Chitepo, highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving education for all, including in vocational training.

She was speaking at a learning event that was recently hosted by Plan International, whose focus was on supporting adolescent girls’ education.

Dr Chitepo noted that unlike academic instruction, the scope of vocational training is limited to equipping one to understand job requirements, as a result Government will require partnerships in pushing for vocational educational training for all.

“As Government and Ministries cannot implement such initiatives alone, it is our humble request that as we push toward ensuring that the education for all is successful, my Ministry is also pushing for technical vocational educational training for all.

“In line with this drive I humbly request engagement and further support to our skills training initiative from Plan International and other partners to ensure success,” she said.

Currently the Ministry, through its Vocational Training Centres, offers courses that include auto mechanics, wielding, catering, tourism and hospitality and agriculture among others.

Through the Supporting Adolescent Girls project, out of school girls of between 10 and 19 years of age are empowered to have improved learning outcomes and transition to education, training or employment delivered through hubs in districts around the country.
