Government will soon embark on a supplementary polio vaccination blitz for children under the age of five following the recent outbreak of the disease in the region.
The first round of the roll-out will be conducted between October 27 to October 30, while the second round will be done between December 1 and December 4.
Other regional countries that have already started immunisations are Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.
Speaking at a media training workshop on disease outbreaks and immunisation on Monday, Ministry of Health and Child Care national expanded programme on immunisation (EPI) manager Mrs Colline Chigodo said provinces have already been notified about the programme.
“Mozambique and Malawi have reported cases of polio in places that are near our borders,” she said.
“Zimbabwe last had a case of polio in 1989 and (was) certified polio free in 2005. We want to maintain that.
