The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has warned non-Government schools that implemented unapproved fees and levies to revert back to approved fees and reimburse parents accordingly.
In a statement on Thursday, permanent secretary for Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs Tumisang Thabela said schools that are increasing fees and charging levies without consulting parents or getting permission from the Ministry will attract severe penalties.
“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to advise its valued stakeholders that non-Governmental schools which are increasing fees and charging levies without consulting with parents or getting permission from the Ministry’s permanent secretary will attract severe penalties,” the statement reads in part.
“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education therefore warns all responsible authorities to ensure they charge approved fees and levies.
“Schools that had charged unapproved fees and levies should revert back to approved fees and levies and reimburse parents accordingly.”
Schools increased fees and levies for this term after the schools’ calendar indicated that this term had 80 days instead of the normal 60 days.
