A 26-year-old man from Gutu was on Thursday sentenced to 18 years in jail after he was found guilty of raping a six-year-old girl.

Dickens Nyemba of Nyemba Village under Chief Chimombe in Gutu appeared before Masvingo magistrate Ms Patience Madondo, who convicted him on account of overwhelming evidence.

The State led by prosecutor Mr Liberty Hove said on February 22 this year, at around 6pm, the minor was playing with other children at Zimbizi Business Centre.

Nyemba, who was slaughtering cattle nearby, came to where the children were playing and whispered in the victim’s ears that he wanted to give her sweets, but she had to come alone.

He took the child to a nearby bush and raped her.

The minor was referred to Gutu Mission Hospital, where she was medically examined and a report was made, leading to Nyemba’s arrest.
