The launch of a new handbook, Responsible Mining in Zimbabwe: An Environmental, Social and Governance Handbook for the Zimbabwean Mining Sector, is set to revolutionise the way the country approaches mineral extraction.
In an interview, lead author Ms Alexandra Mliswa highlighted the book’s role in promoting sustainable and ethical mining practices.
The handbook is designed to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into the Zimbabwean mining industry.
“Its primary purpose is to ensure that mineral extraction benefits the economy while minimising ecological harm and promoting social equity,” said Ms Mliswa.
The book addresses pressing issues such as environmental conservation, community engagement, and corporate accountability given Zimbabwe’s rich mineral resources,.
It aims to guide policymakers, mining companies and stakeholders towards practical strategies that balance profitability with responsibility.
By aligning Zimbabwe’s mining sector with global sustainability standards, the handbook seeks to contribute to long-term economic growth, environmental protection and improved livelihoods for local communities.
“Our goal is to transform Zimbabwe’s mining industry into a model of sustainable development,” said Ms Mliswa.
