POLICE in Harare have launched a manhunt for Ireen Pamela Govati, who is wanted in connection with the murder of her newborn baby in Hopley.

The incident occurred on December 8 last year at a house in Hopley Zone 6, Waterfalls. Govati allegedly gave birth to a baby boy and hid the infant inside a 20-litre plastic bucket under her bed.

The baby’s cries alerted Govati’s 12-year-old daughter and niece, who discovered him. Police reports indicate that Govati then took the newborn to her tenant, Rejoice Mapfumo. Mapfumo allegedly grabbed the baby by the legs and slammed him twice onto the ground, killing him instantly.

The two women then buried the child in a shallow grave.

The crime came to light the same day when the children reported it to the police, leading to Mapfumo’s arrest. However, Govati remains on the run.

Police are appealing for information on her whereabouts. Anyone with details is urged to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, WhatsApp 0712800197, or visit the nearest police station.
