A Harare woman has been granted a protection order against her abusive ex-boyfriend after enduring repeated harassment, threats and assault.

Ms Meenal Naratam issued the order in favour of Naome Zidenga at the Harare Civil Court on Thursday after she detailed the disturbing abuse she suffered at the hands of Lawrence Tipe.

Zidenga told the court that Tipe, the father of her children, had been physically and emotionally abusing her, even in front of their children, since their breakup.

“Lawrence is my baby daddy. The problem started when we broke up,” Zidenga said. “He assaults me anytime he chooses, even in front of the children. We no longer live together, but he waits for me when I pick up the children from school, drives to my house, and threatens me with a knife.

“He takes me to a secluded place in Budiriro, beats me with sticks, and sometimes forces himself on me. He keeps me there for more than two days. When he is done assaulting me, he buys medicine, and after I recover, he drops me at my house.

“I have reported the matter to the police multiple times, but nothing has been done. That’s why I’m here seeking a protection order.”

Tipe did not appear in court, leading Ms Naratam to grant Zidenga the protection order.

The magistrate also advised her to approach the Mbare Magistrates’ Court, as kidnapping is a serious criminal offence that requires further legal action.
