HEAVY rains are expected in most parts of the country from Thursday until Monday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said.

In a statement, MSD, in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, said although the heavy rains are expected countrywide, southern parts of the country could be hardest hit.

“The effects of a cut-off low, expected from Thursday February 16 into the weekend, should be felt in most parts of the country, with heavy rains mainly expected in the southern half of the country,” reads the statement. “Rainfall amounts in excess of 65mm in 24 hours with a high probability of flash floods in the low-lying areas are anticipated.”

The Department of Civil Protection has since urged the public to look out for open drains and potholes that may be covered in water, adding that motorists should exercise caution on the roads as visibility might be reduced.

“People should stay indoors during thunderstorms unless in cases of emergency,” it said.
