A new Heritage Studies textbook for Lower 6 learners has been approved for use at schools by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
The book titled “Understanding A-Level Heritage Studies Form 5” was written by Ruth Moyo from Gwanda, Butelezi Moyo (Bulawayo) and Josiphat Gwezhira (Harare), and is being distributed by Bulawayo-based Dingani Publishers.
Currently, two Lower 6 Heritage Studies books have been approved by Government. The other book was published by Palm Publishers.
In an interview, the ministry’s director of communication and advocacy Mr Taungana Ndoro said approval of the textbooks is part of Government’s drive to ensure that indigenous languages and the country’s history are not eroded.
“The role of indigenous languages in sustainable development has to be emphasised from early childhood learning and this culminates in individuals grounded in knowing who they are and where they came from,” said Mr Ndoro.
He said this has been seen with the success of the ministry’s radio lessons that have become popular.
Dingani Publishers director Mr Witness Dingani said they will continue to support Government’s objectives of growing and diversifying the education sector.
“As publishers, we are in full support of the education sector and this is the reason we are working hard to release the right material for learners.
“We will continue to engage with writers from different subjects to ensure that the education curriculum is grown and supported in an academic way,” said Mr Dingani. – @mthabisi_mthire
