NEW: Hornets ready for basketball resumption

HARARE City Hornets are looking to pick up where they left off prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and extend their dominance in the Harare Basketball League once again.

Like most clubs, the municipal outfit has been forced to wait for the league to resume, but this has not stopped it from working behind the scenes.

“All our contracts are done and we are so elated to have retained the services of all our senior players,” said club chairperson Sunny Mbofana.

“We look forward to a very exciting season and seek to consolidate our position as the biggest basketball club in the land.

“This is before we take a crack at the region and hopefully make our presence felt at the biggest continental competition in BAL (Basketball Africa League) 2022.

“Interestingly, both our senior teams topped the HBA 2020/21 logs when the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged all activities more than a year ago.

“This left both senior teams as HBA defending champions, with the ladies being the national champions,” he said.

The Hornets will largely be unchanged, with most of the senior players in the men’s and women’s sides tied down to long-term contracts.

However, they are likely to be a few new faces, as a few rookies have been promoted into the senior teams, while some players have traced their roots back to the Hornets.

Among the senior players who have signed new deals are Patience Chinhoyi, Stacey Wiscott, Charity Mucucuti, Luta Shaba, Rachel Makoni and Thelma Goredema for the women.

Tawanda Chitsinde, Simbarashe Mungomezi, Noah Penduka and Duncan Shenje represent the core of the senior men’s side.

Sharon Chamwarura and Julie Misihairambwi-Mtambalika will be making gallant returns for the women’s side, while national team player Ben Nyatanga and Eric Manjeya have recommitted themselves to the club by putting pen to paper.

New signings include Roland Changara, formerly with DZ Raiderz, and Godknows Mutizwa.
