NEW: ICZ boosts police efforts

THE Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has handed over roadblock equipment to the tune of US$82 000 to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

The donation is part of the short-term insurance sector’s participation and contribution to national development and disaster responsiveness.

Speaking at the event in Harare on Thursday, the chairperson of ICZ’s public relations committee, Mr Wilberforce Machimbidzofa, said the roles of the short-term insurance body and the ZRP intersect.

“Our motor insurance business relies heavily on law enforcement services to ensure compliance as well as curtail risks that result from immoral behaviour, which has been proven to be the main cause of road traffic accidents in our country. Increased compliance with insurance requirements will work in the favour of motorists, victims and the Government.

“Depending on the nature of accident, if there is insurance compensation for bodily harm, loss of life or damage to property is availed by the insurers,” said Mr Machimbidzofa.

“In cases where there is no insurance cover, the government is left with the burden of carrying the medical and at times funeral expenses of victims.

“Damaged national and individual property is left unrepaired or never to be replaced. Hence for the nation to reap full benefits of insurance, enforcement of compliance with insurance requirement is a necessity.”
