NEW: Infant fatally burnt in inferno

A four-month-old infant was burnt to death in a fire incident at District Development Fund (DDF) Complex in Shurugwi on Monday, police have confirmed.

The toddler had been left in a room together with her four-year-old brother, who accidentally tipped over a lit candle that was near the bed.

“The candle fell on the bed and the fire engulfed the whole room,” reads part of the statement by police.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a case of infanticide in which the body of a male foetus was found dumped in a drain wrapped in a sack at Block 1 Matapi Flats in Mbare.

Police are appealing for anyone who has information to report to the nearest police station.
